Dr. Kathi N. Miner received her BA in Psychology and Social Behavior from the University of California, Irvine, her MA in Experimental Psychology from Southern Methodist University, and her PhD in Psychology and Women’s Studies from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She then joined academia and became an Associate Professor of Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Women’s and Gender Studies at Texas A&M University. She now works in industry as a Diversity & Inclusion Specialist at a large energy company in the Middle East.
In The Committed Professor, A Memoir: My Fall from the Lectern to the Psych Ward, Dr. Kathi Miner tells the true story of the moment she discovered her husband’s infidelity to her being “committed” to a psychiatric hospital because of his prolonged narcissistic abuse. She was a Professor of Psychology and Women’s and Gender Studies at Texas A&M University when she found her husband’s double life of betrayal. As more of his disloyalty and deceit was revealed, the more she realized his cheating was only the tip of the iceberg. In her narrative of events, she links her experiences to larger patriarchal societal structures related to gender, marriage, and divorce. She exposes by personal example how difficult divorce is for women because it is embedded in a system of sexism and misogyny. Her story demonstrates that anyone, including strong, educated women, can be involved in abusive relationships and that male privilege plays a critical role in the process of divorcing abusive men.
The Committed Professor, A Memoir is a powerful and unflinching account of one woman’s descent from contentment to emotional devastation. It reads like the plot of a dramatic film, but this is no work of fiction. These events are real, and Miner’s retelling is raw and honest. By sharing her experience, she sheds light on the devastating effects of manipulation and betrayal, offering a cautionary tale that may resonate with others facing similar emotional abuse. The Committed Professor is a difficult but ultimately rewarding read, marked by Miner’s courage to confront her trauma head-on.
In her powerful debut memoir, Miner charts her path through the painful terrain of abuse, resilience, and self-discovery. As a professor specializing in gender issues, Miner offers a unique perspective on navigating high-conflict divorces and societal structures that reinforce gender inequalities. Her writing is candid and reflective, combining personal experience with a critique of societal structures that reinforce gender inequalities. More than just a survival story, it's a call for empathy and systematic transformation in the treatment of women in abusive relationships and tumultuous divorces. A poignant and stimulating read for those intrigued by the intersections of gender, trauma, and fortitude.
Miner, a professor of feminist psychology, makes her debut with a candid and unflinching account of her life as both an academic and a woman trapped in a toxic marriage. After filing for divorce, she faced an escalating wave of manipulation that ultimately led to her institutionalization. Miner's voice remains steady and resolute throughout, providing both a deeply personal narrative and an insightful critique of the patriarchal norms that perpetuate such abuse. Structured around pivotal moments of change, the chapters guide readers through Miner's struggles, her journey of self-reclamation, and her eventual path to healing. Though challenging to read, the memoir offers hope and strength to those facing similar struggles. A must-read for survivors of narcissistic or psychological abuse, scholars in psychology or law, family law professionals, and anyone interested in true stories of resilience.
When reading The Committed Professor, A Memoir, readers will find themselves cheering the author on, crying with her while she goes through more aggravation with her husband, and helping to pick her up again in the end. It’s raw with emotions from the first page to the last and when you finish reading it, you’ll feel as if you were right next to the author experiencing everything she was firsthand. This is one book that is highly recommended! Well done!
In a direct and raw account of horrors, Dr. Kathi Miner shares the egregious assaults she experienced during her marriage (and divorce proceedings). The graphic scenes and intentional arrangement of descriptive encounters left me feeling sad, angry, joyous (whenever there was a light of triumph for her) and disgust. The Committed Professor, A Memoir is a tantamount example of the courage it takes to face your demons and the triumph that awaits on the other side.
